Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup: Billy Graham Dies At 99; CMS Students On School Safety; More

Friday, February 23, 2018

Charlotte native Billy Graham dies at the age of 99.  A week after the Florida high school shooting, the gun debate continues around the country with student protests planned in Charlotte.  The Queen City is among those areas that were targeted by the Russians during the last election cycle.  And reaching out from prison former Panther Rae Carruth attempts to build a relationship with his son and is rebuffed.  Mike Collins and the roundup reporters detail those stories and more.

On this edition of the local news roundup…

“America’s Pastor” and Charlotte native Billy Graham died Wednesday at the age of 99. We’ll talk about reaction to the evangelist’s death here in the Queen City and beyond, and how the plans for his funeral will affect the Queen City.

Just over a week after the deadly shooting at a high school in Florida, the gun debate continues in Washington and around the country as student walkouts are planned and memorial services honoring the victims take place in Charlotte and elsewhere. What our North Carolina lawmakers are considering.

We learned late last week that Russian operatives had targeted Charlotte and North Carolina during the 2016 election, according to FBI director Robert Mueller’s indictment. We’ll let you know the details.

Rae Carruth is reaching out from prison in an attempt to build a relationship with the grandmother of his son Chancellor as he approaches his October release date. But his 15-page letter held some accusations for Saundra Adams as well. We’ll discuss what was said and Adams’ reaction.

The Police Foundation released its final independent report following the police killing of Keith Scott in 2016, saying that CMPD “acted appropriately”, but still called for better police training and transparency. Reaction to the report, including from some activists who say that the report falls short.

Host Mike Collins and our panel of reporters dig in to those stories and much more on the Charlotte Talks Local News Roundup.
