The Hickory City Council has approved new rules to let food trucks and food carts operate in some city parks and parking lots.
The rules approved Tuesday night require food vendors to get an annual $25 permit. They'll also need health inspections and proof of insurance.
A map of allowed locations will be posted on the city web site. Park spaces will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis, with many sites having a limit of two vendors. Parks include (see map):
- Glenn C. Hilton Jr. Memorial Park, 6th St. NW
- Henry Fork River Regional Park, Sweet Bay Lane
- Kiwanis Park, 6th St. SE
- Neill W. Clark Jr. Park, 6th St. Drive NW
- Stanford Park, 8th Street Drive NE
- Taft Broom Park, 7th Avenue SW
The council vote followed a series of public meetings, a review of other cities' policies and an online survey that found overwhelming support for food trucks on public property.
Hickory doesn't regulate food trucks on private property.
