Two months after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police determined last fall's fatal shooting of Keith Scott was justified, the Citizens Review Board ruled Tuesday there was "substantial evidence of error" in CMPD's conclusion. The panel's 8-2 vote set the stage for an August hearing that the board's attorney said "will look a lot like a trial." But the police department stood by its finding that Officer Brentley Vinson properly followed procedures.
Gov. Roy Cooper put his veto stamp to work on the Republican legislature's state budget, which Cooper had previously criticized as "fiscally irresponsible." But the veto was quickly canceled out by GOP lawmakers. Meanwhile, a state House committee got the ball rolling on a possible impeachment investigation into Democratic Secretary of State Elaine Marshall.
City funding for a possible Major League Soccer stadium might not be fully out of bounds. A City Council committee agreed to discuss funding in late July, right about the time Mecklenburg commissioners were planning to vote on putting money into soccer.
